September, 2011 - The
OHI is most concerned about the current effort on the renegotiation
of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and in particular the
absence of an integrated approach to watershed management that would
connect headwaters to full watersheds and the whole of the Great
Lakes basin. See our
submission.
April, 2011 - The OHI
strongly suggested that the Province deny the application of the
Highland Companies for a license to extract aggregate for a proposed
mega-quarry in Melancthon. See
our submission.
January, 2011 - See the
article on Integrated
Watershed Management published in Water Canada.
November 19, 2010
- The OHI made a power-point presentation at the annual AD Latournell
Conservation Symposium, the province’s foremost meeting of natural
resource managers, entitled Headwater
Stewardship: Successes and Challenges. The presentation distilled
observations from both OHI policy and program analysis as well as
common threads from ten workshops with 250 participants staged by
the OHI in 2010.
Summer & Fall, 2010 – Actions on the Provincial
Policy Statement
Through the summer and fall of 2010, the OHI participated
extensively in the mandatory 5-year review of the PPS. This included:
- Being a member of Planning for Sustainability:
A PPS Review Collaborative;
- Coordinating a series of regional meetings with
other members of the Collaborative to invite additional rural
perspectives on the PPS, particularly those focused on natural
heritage and hydrologic systems; and,
- Developing and providing our own submission on
the PPS.
We are pleased to provide copies of the submissions
from the OHI and the Collaborative, as well as a summary of the
regional meetings, with the most recent activity first.
