The OHI highly recommends the annual reports of the ECO as a source of both high-level synthesis of major environmental initiatives in Ontario and analyses on the strengths and weaknesses of these initiatives, many of which are listed separately in the next section. Particular items of interest include:

  • 2004-2005, with sections on the Provincial Policy Statement, Great Lakes Water Resource Agreements, and Ontario’s Biodiversity Strategy;
  • 2005-2006, with sections on the Great Lakes, The Clean water Act, and impacts of both aging landfills and sand and gravel extraction;
  • 2006-2007, which identifies four irreconcilable priorities in which planning efforts must be significantly refocused if Ontario is to begin creating truly sustainable urban and rural communities in southern Ontario, as well as an analysis of land use and resource allocation decisions in the boreal north; and,
  • 2007-2008,  with sections on drought in Ontario, protected areas planning, Ontario’s biodiversity strategy, agreements respecting the Great Lakes, and several sections on permits to take water and groundwater protection.
